Key takeaways
- Ivalua and Coupa have both been Leaders in every edition of Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Source-to-Pay Suites since the first one in 2024.
- Both describe one codebase and one data model; the real architectural difference is that Ivalua is multi-instance and Coupa multi-tenant.
- That difference decides upgrades: Ivalua customers schedule their own, at least every two years, while Coupa ships three releases a year to all customers at once.
- Coupa has extended its suite by acquisition into supply chain design, treasury, intake and document capture; Forrester notes that four deals in twelve months is a lot to integrate.
- Coupa has been owned by Thoma Bravo since 2023 and has had an interim CEO since August 2026; Ivalua is private, with its founder as executive chairman and Hg as an investor since 2024.
- This page is written by an Ivalua implementer: it compares published facts and turns the choice into questions for the buyer, not into a verdict.
What is the difference between Ivalua and Coupa?
Ivalua and Coupa both sell a full source-to-pay suite and both rank as Leaders with Gartner. The difference that changes a project is how each platform is run: Ivalua gives every customer its own instance, configured and upgraded on that customer’s calendar; Coupa runs one multi-tenant platform and upgrades all customers together.
| Criterion | Ivalua | Coupa |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Multi-instance SaaS: each customer has its own instance; 98% of customers on private cloud, 2% on premises (Ivalua, citing IDC, September 2026) | Multi-tenant SaaS hosted on AWS; customer data kept apart between tenants (Coupa, 2021) |
| Code and data | One codebase and workflow engine, one data model (Ivalua) | One codebase and a shared data model (IDC 2026, quoted by Coupa) |
| Upgrades | Required at least every two years, scheduled with the customer; complex configuration added after go-live charged at each upgrade (contract terms published in 2023) | Three releases a year, delivered to all customers at the same time (Coupa, 2021) |
| Direct spend | APQP, PPAP, FAI and 8D quality processes, bill-of-materials costing, ERP, MRP and PLM data synchronisation | Supply chain design from LLamasoft (acquired November 2020); Leader for direct spend with IDC in 2026, like Ivalua |
| Payments and treasury | Accounts payable automation and supplier payments (ACH, virtual cards, cross-border transfers); treasury is not among the areas Ivalua names on its platform page (October 2026) | Coupa Pay for supplier payments; treasury management from BELLIN (acquired June 2020) |
| AI | IVA, one agent that orchestrates sub-agents; IVA Studio in beta since June 2026; customers may bring their own model | Navi agents and Agent Studio; 350 customers using Navi agents (Coupa, August 2026) |
| Ownership | Private; founder David Khuat-Duy executive chairman, Franck Lheureux CEO since January 2025; Hg an investor since 2024 | Thoma Bravo since February 2023 (about $8.0 billion); interim CEO since August 2026 |
| Gartner Magic Quadrant, S2P suites | Leader in 2024, 2025 and 2026 | Leader in 2024, 2025 and 2026; highest on Ability to Execute in 2026 (Coupa) |

Two Leader-rated suites on a single codebase each: the choice turns on your own instance versus a shared platform, who carries the upgrades, and which extensions you need.
How are Ivalua and Coupa built?
“Single codebase” does not separate the two. Ivalua describes “a single codebase and workflow engine” and “one data model”. IDC’s 2026 direct spend assessment, as quoted by Coupa, names Coupa’s central differentiator as “a single unified codebase and shared data model”, and the same assessment, as quoted by Ivalua, names Ivalua’s unified data model as its most substantive differentiator.
The split is in how customers share the platform. Ivalua sells a multi-instance SaaS: each customer runs its own instance, and Ivalua reports 98% of customers on private cloud and 2% on premises. Coupa describes, in a 2021 document for IT leaders, a multi-tenant platform hosted on AWS, with a virtual private cloud that keeps data from mixing across tenants.
Upgrades follow from that choice:
- Ivalua: the customer’s calendar. Ivalua’s 2023 contract terms recommend an upgrade every 12 to 18 months and require one at least every two years. Complex configuration and integrations added after go-live are charged again at each upgrade, and the customer supplies test scripts.
- Coupa: one calendar for all. Coupa’s 2021 document says no-code configuration lets it deliver innovation to all customers simultaneously, three times a year, with what it calls light-touch or no-touch upgrades. That is the vendor’s description; your interfaces still meet each release.
Read together, these sources mean that an instance of its own lets each Ivalua customer carry its own configuration, and that Ivalua’s terms put the cost of every complex departure from the standard on that customer, at every upgrade. How that plays out over several versions is the subject of the v164 case study and of the Ivalua upgrade offer.
Which one covers direct spend, payments and treasury?
Both cover direct spend and supplier payments; Coupa adds treasury management, bought in 2020. IDC named both Ivalua and Coupa Leaders in its AI-enabled direct spend assessment of September 2026.
- Ivalua, direct spend. Ivalua lists APQP, PPAP, FAI and 8D quality processes, new product introduction, cost visibility at bill-of-materials level and synchronisation of ERP, MRP and PLM data on one platform.
- Coupa, supply chain. Coupa bought LLamasoft, a supply chain design and analysis company, in November 2020 for about $791.5 million in cash plus shares, according to its annual report.
- Coupa, payments and treasury. Coupa Pay handles payments to suppliers, contractors and employees by bank transfer, virtual card and other methods; Coupa bought BELLIN, a treasury management software company, in June 2020 and positioned it as Coupa Treasury Management.
- Ivalua, payables and payments. Ivalua names accounts payable automation (invoice capture, matching, approval) on the same data model as sourcing and contracts, and a payments module that orchestrates supplier payments by ACH, virtual card and cross-border transfer. Treasury does not appear among the areas its platform page names; that is not proof the need cannot be met, so ask.
How do Ivalua’s and Coupa’s AI offers compare?
Both now sell agents; they package them differently. Ivalua presents one agent, IVA, that “creates and orchestrates temporary sub-agents” for complex work, managed in IVA Studio, announced in beta on 11 June 2026 with general availability promised for the summer. IVA is LLM-agnostic: customers use the models Ivalua provides or their own, and IVA reaches external systems through MCP. Ivalua says IVA inherits the permissions of the user who calls it and logs every action.
Coupa presents Navi, introduced at Inspire 2025 as a digital AI teammate, with Agent Studio for custom agents. In August 2026 Coupa said 350 customers used Navi agents and more than 130 custom agents had been built, and offered promotional pricing on agentic AI to the end of the year. After Inspire 2026, Forrester wrote that Coupa’s usage- or value-based pricing model for AI, “though a bold move, was not as well thought through.”
These are vendor descriptions from June to August 2026. AI features change by release: check what is generally available, and how it is priced, at the date of your contract.
Who owns Ivalua and Coupa, and what changed in 2026?
Both are private. Thoma Bravo completed its all-cash purchase of Coupa on 28 February 2023, for about $8.0 billion or $81 a share, with a minority investment from a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority; Coupa left Nasdaq. In August 2026 Coupa announced that its CEO, Leagh Turner, was stepping away for personal reasons and that Mike Lipps, a Thoma Bravo operating partner, would serve as interim CEO.
Between May 2025 and May 2026 Coupa bought Cirtuo (category management), Scoutbee (supplier discovery), Rossum (document capture) and Tonkean (intake and orchestration). Forrester’s comment: “Four acquisitions in a matter of 12 months is certainly a lot to integrate.”
Ivalua was founded in France in 2000 by David Khuat-Duy; in January 2025 he became executive chairman and chief AI officer, and Franck Lheureux, previously its chief revenue officer, became CEO. Hg has been an investor since 2024. For 2025 it reported more than 500 customer brands, 24% organic growth in subscription revenue, more than 1,000 employees, and 3,100 certified partners and consultants in its ecosystem; these are its own figures. The Ivalua pillar covers its ownership history.
What do Gartner, IDC and Forrester say about Ivalua and Coupa?
Analysts place both vendors at the top, and each vendor announces its own position. The table lists what was announced and by whom.
| Evaluation | Date | Ivalua | Coupa | Announced by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gartner Magic Quadrant for Source-to-Pay Suites | January 2024, March 2025, January 2026 | Leader in all three | Leader in all three; highest on Ability to Execute among 13 vendors in 2026 | Each vendor |
| Gartner Peer Insights Voice of the Customer, S2P suites | July 2026 | Not named Customers’ Choice | The only Customers’ Choice; 4.9 out of 5 as of April 2026 | Coupa |
| IDC MarketScape, AI-enabled direct spend | September 2026 | Leader | Leader | Each vendor |
| Forrester Wave, accounts payable invoice automation | Q2 2026 | Leader | Among the 15 vendors evaluated; position not checked | Ivalua; Forrester for the list |
Both are Leaders wherever both were assessed; Coupa leads on Gartner’s execution axis and on peer reviews, by its own announcements.
Gartner does not endorse vendors, and Peer Insights reflects the opinions of individual reviewers. Use these ratings to build a shortlist, not to choose.
Is Ivalua cheaper than Coupa?
There is no public basis to say. Neither vendor publishes list prices; both quote per deal on modules, volumes and term. Maryland’s 2025 contract for its Ivalua platform records a discount of 59.6% on Ivalua’s list pricing for licences and maintenance, which shows that list prices exist and move.
For Coupa, the buying platform Vendr reports a median of about $95,000 a year across the purchases its users logged (updated February 2026), from roughly $21,000 to $331,000. That figure mixes single modules and full suites, so it cannot be set against an Ivalua full-suite contract. Public Ivalua contract values, and where the money goes in a project, are in Ivalua implementation cost and timeline.
Where does SAP Ariba fit next to Ivalua and Coupa?
SAP is the third vendor in searches such as “Ivalua vs Ariba vs Coupa”, and a Leader in Gartner’s 2025 and 2026 quadrants. On 12 March 2026 SAP made next-gen SAP Ariba available, rebuilt on SAP Business Technology Platform. Existing customers can move voluntarily “without commercial implications”, run the current and the new system in parallel during the transition, and receive the new capabilities in increments through 2026 and into 2027, including Joule agents for bid analysis, intake management and contract management through Icertis.
Ariba is therefore in a transition of its own: a buyer comparing it with Ivalua or Coupa should ask which capabilities are generally available on the new platform at signature. For a vendor-neutral method across all three and the rest of the market, eProcurement Toolkit’s procurement software guide is the place to start; this site is not neutral.
What should you ask before choosing Ivalua or Coupa?
The facts above become a decision once they meet your scope. These questions follow from them, and apply to Coupa as much as to Ivalua:
- How far do your processes depart from the standard? On Ivalua, every complex configuration is carried, and charged, at each upgrade; on Coupa, ask which of your requirements no-code configuration cannot reach.
- Who tests the upgrades, and how often? Once every one to two years on your own instance, or three releases a year on a shared one: each needs test scripts and interface checks, and someone to run them.
- Is direct spend in scope? Ask both vendors for references in your industry running the quality and bill-of-materials processes you need, not only indirect buying.
- Where should payments and treasury live? In the suite (Coupa Pay, Coupa Treasury) or in your ERP and treasury system, with source-to-pay feeding them.
- Which AI is generally available, on which model, at what price? Check availability at contract date, whether your own model can be used, and how agents are billed.
- Who will implement it? Ivalua’s terms require Level 2 certification to configure and Level 3 for integrations; ask any integrator, on either platform, for the named team.
- What does ownership change for you? Ask for the roadmap commitments you depend on to be written into the contract, whoever owns the vendor next year.
How neutral is this comparison?
It is not neutral, and says so. I am a certified Ivalua consultant (L1 to L3) with three full-cycle Ivalua implementations at BNP Paribas; I am not an Ivalua partner and I do not speak for Ivalua. This page compares published facts, most of them the vendors’ own statements, dated where they may change; it does not report a Coupa or Ariba project.
If you have chosen Ivalua, or are close to it, I take senior Ivalua missions or lead an Ivalua team. How an Ivalua project runs is in Ivalua implementation.
Frequently asked questions
Short answers to the questions people ask, each one sourced above.
Is Ivalua better than Coupa?
No published evaluation ranks one above the other overall: both are Gartner Leaders in source-to-pay. What the sources show is a trade-off. Ivalua gives each customer its own instance and upgrade calendar, and its terms charge complex configuration again at each upgrade; Coupa upgrades all customers together three times a year and adds treasury to the suite. Which matters more depends on your scope.
What is the main difference between Ivalua and Coupa?
Architecture. Ivalua runs each customer on its own instance, upgraded on the customer’s schedule at least every two years. Coupa runs one multi-tenant platform on AWS and ships three releases a year to all customers. Both describe a single codebase and one data model, so that is not the difference.
Is Coupa multi-tenant and Ivalua multi-instance?
Yes. Coupa describes a multi-tenant architecture hosted on AWS, with data kept apart between tenants. Ivalua describes a multi-instance SaaS architecture in which each customer has its own instance; it reports 98% of customers on private cloud and 2% on premises, as of September 2026.
Who owns Coupa?
Thoma Bravo, the private equity firm, which completed its purchase of Coupa on 28 February 2023 for about $8.0 billion, with a minority investment from the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. Since August 2026 Coupa has been led by an interim CEO, Mike Lipps, a Thoma Bravo operating partner.
What is the difference between Ivalua and SAP Ariba?
Ivalua is a single source-to-pay suite run on a dedicated instance per customer. SAP Ariba is SAP’s procurement suite; its next-gen version, rebuilt on SAP Business Technology Platform, became available in March 2026, with capabilities delivered in increments into 2027 and a voluntary migration for existing customers.
Which is cheaper, Ivalua or Coupa?
No public source allows the comparison. Neither publishes list prices. Maryland’s 2025 Ivalua contract shows 59.6% off list for licences and maintenance; Vendr reports a Coupa median of about $95,000 a year across mixed scopes. Compare quotes for the same modules, volumes and term.
