Case study: why BNP Paribas redesigned its Ivalua platform completely on v164

BNP Paribas rebuilt its Ivalua platform from scratch on v164 because v156 carried many complex specific configurations. The rebuild reset and simplified them and redesigned the workflows. I worked on it hands-on, and it was delivered on budget and on schedule.

Why redesign instead of carrying v156 forward?

The group platform built on Ivalua v156 carried many complex specific configurations. Each one has to be understood, maintained and tested again whenever the platform changes. On v164 the group chose a complete redesign: a new solution built from scratch rather than the old configuration moved to a new version.

The rebuild was a reset. The specific configurations were simplified, and the workflows were redesigned rather than copied.

v164 kept the platform and changed the way it was built: fewer specific configurations, new workflows.

What was my role on v164?

I stayed on the programme as a business and technical Ivalua consultant, so I knew the v156 configuration I was helping to replace.

  • Design of the new solution and its redesigned workflows.
  • Configuration of the rebuilt platform.
  • Integrations with the group’s other systems.
  • Custom SQL for reports, controls and data flows.
  • Change management and user support on the entity rollouts, in France and internationally.
  • Across 2020–2023, covering v156 and v164, I led a mixed team of 15.

What was the outcome?

The v164 solution was delivered on budget and on schedule, like v156 before it. It then served as the starting point for the third cycle: a new v182 solution built from scratch, delivered on schedule and still evolving.
