Key takeaways
- IVA started in November 2023 as a generative AI assistant inside Ivalua. In 2026, Ivalua presents it as an agent that can act across the platform, on demand, inside workflows or when an event occurs.
- IVA Studio is the part that manages IVA’s skills, permissions, tools and connections. Ivalua released it in beta on 11 June 2026 and announced general availability for the summer; no public confirmation of general availability was found by 29 October 2026.
- How IVA is licensed is not public. Ask your account team, with the version and the date.
- Ivalua says IVA inherits the user’s permissions and can never exceed them. So your role matrix decides what IVA can see and do.
- Before switching IVA on, check the access rights, the data in the domain you start with, the test scenarios, the human approval points, and retest at each upgrade.
What is Ivalua’s AI?
Ivalua’s AI is called IVA. It is built into the Ivalua platform and works on the platform’s own data: suppliers, sourcing events, contracts, orders and invoices. Ivalua launched it in 2023 as an assistant; in 2026 it presents IVA as an agent that can carry out tasks, with IVA Studio to manage what it is allowed to do.
This page reads Ivalua’s public material: its product page, its press releases and the trade press, as of 29 October 2026. It is not a test report and gives no figure from client projects. Where a statement is Ivalua’s own, the page says so.
For the general idea of an AI agent in procurement, eProcurement Toolkit’s guide What is an AI agent for procurement? explains it without a vendor angle.
IVA, IVA Studio, generative and agentic AI: what is the difference?
The names have changed over time. IVA first meant Intelligent Virtual Assistant, a generative AI assistant that answers and drafts. Ivalua’s product page now calls it the Intelligent Virtual Agent: it does tasks, not only answers. IVA Studio is the place where the agent’s skills, permissions and tools are managed.
| Name | What Ivalua says it is | When | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| IVA, generative AI assistant | Capabilities including Supplier Research, Legal Assistant, RFP Assistant and Chat With Your Documents; OpenAI models on Azure and open-source models tuned by Ivalua | Launched 28 November 2023 | Ivalua press release |
| IVA, agentic AI | “One agent. Full platform access.” Runs on demand, inside workflows, or automatically when events occur; creates temporary sub-agents for complex work | Product page read 29 October 2026; release of 11 June 2026 | Ivalua product page and release |
| IVA Studio | “The AI control tower managing IVA’s skills, permissions, tools, and MCP integrations” | Beta from 11 June 2026 | Ivalua release |
| Skills library | 34 skills in six areas: supplier management, sourcing, contracts, eProcurement, invoicing and payments, platform; including autonomous sourcing | April 2026, described as releasing | CPO Rising (Ardent Partners) |
| Models | Models from OpenAI, Google, Mistral, Anthropic, Meta, xAI and others, or the customer’s own model | Product page, October 2026 | Ivalua product page |
| Connections | Bidirectional MCP, the protocol that lets AI tools call other systems | Product page, October 2026 | Ivalua product page |
Generative IVA drafts and answers; agentic IVA acts in the platform; IVA Studio controls what it may do.
Ivalua gives examples of the agent at work. A category manager asks IVA to take up an expiring contract, compare prices, find suppliers, then create and launch the sourcing event, in one conversation. In accounts payable, IVA checks invoices against contract terms. A supplier risk event can trigger it without anyone asking.
What is announced and what is available?
IVA has been available since 2023 in its first form. IVA Studio was released in beta on 11 June 2026, with general availability announced for the summer of 2026. By 29 October 2026, no public source confirmed that general availability: no press release and no public release note.
| Date | What happened | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 28 November 2023 | IVA launched as a generative AI assistant | Launched | Ivalua press release |
| March 2026 | IVA Studio announced at Ivalua NOW 2026, “launching in Q2 2026”; one press report links it to version 182 | Announced | Procurement Magazine, 13 March 2026 |
| 24 April 2026 | Analyst description of IVA Studio and its 34 skills | Described as releasing, no date | CPO Rising |
| 11 June 2026 | IVA Studio released in beta; general availability announced for the summer | Beta | Ivalua press release |
| 29 October 2026 | No public confirmation of general availability; no public licence terms for IVA | Not confirmed | Sweep of Ivalua’s site and the trade press |
IVA exists; IVA Studio was in beta in June 2026, and its general availability was still unconfirmed in public on 29 October 2026.
The link between IVA Studio and version 182 comes from a single press report; Ivalua’s own release gives no version number. If your platform is on an earlier version, ask Ivalua which features need an upgrade. The licence is not public either: whether IVA comes with the subscription, as an add-on or by usage is a question for your account team. Ask for the answer in writing, with the version and the date.
What can IVA see and do in your platform?
IVA can see and do what the user who calls it can see and do. Ivalua says IVA inherits the user’s permissions and can never exceed them, and that every action is logged. That is a sound design. It also means your role matrix, the list of who can see and change what, becomes IVA’s role matrix.
Think of a buyer who was given access to another entity’s contracts for one project and kept it, or a support profile that can see every supplier’s bank details. Before IVA, that user had to go and look for the data. With an agent that searches the whole platform for the user, it comes up in an answer.
- List the roles that will use IVA first, and what each one can see: suppliers, contracts, prices, invoices, by entity.
- Remove the access that is no longer needed before IVA is switched on, not after.
- Test IVA with a restricted user: ask for a contract or a price that this user must not see, and check the answer.
- Decide who reads the action log, and how often.
Why does your data decide what IVA gets right?
IVA works on the data in your platform, so its answers are as good as that data. If the same supplier exists three times with different spellings, a question about that supplier’s spend gets three partial answers. If contracts are stored as files with no end date in the record, an agent looking for expiring contracts misses them.
The data from the ERP matters too. In many Ivalua projects, Ivalua sends approved invoices to the ERP and the ERP sends back the payment status. If that return flow is late or incomplete, an agent answering a supplier about a payment works from old data.
Ivalua’s press material says that, unlike competing solutions, there is nothing to integrate or configure. The analyst description of IVA Studio is more careful: it expects many agents to need tuning at the customer level. Plan for configuration and testing, starting with one domain where the data is clean.
What should you check before switching IVA on?
Check the status, the access rights, the data, the tests and the human approval points before switching IVA on, and plan to retest at each upgrade. The list below follows that order. Each item is something you can see done.
- Status and licence. Get in writing which IVA features are generally available on your version, which are in beta, and how they are licensed.
- Model and data location. Ivalua says it never uses customer data to train models and offers a choice of models. Note which model runs your instance, where it runs, and check that your data processing agreement covers it.
- Access rights. Review the role matrix for the first users, and test with a restricted user.
- Data in the first domain. Pick one domain, for example contracts or supplier management, and check its records: duplicates, missing dates, missing owners.
- Test scenarios. Write scenarios with expected answers, including questions IVA should refuse and answers that must quote a document. Run them before go-live.
- Human approval points. For anything IVA does on its own, such as an action triggered by an event, decide who approves before a supplier, a contract or a payment is affected.
- Training and record. Train the users on what IVA sees and what to check, and keep the record: the EU AI Act asks companies that use AI to support their staff’s AI literacy.
- Retest at each upgrade. Ivalua’s published 2023 terms require an upgrade at least every two years. Add your IVA scenarios to the upgrade test plan, as for any workflow: an approval rule built for one entity only still has to be retested at every upgrade, and an AI skill is no different.
Ivalua says IVA is designed to meet EU AI Act requirements. That covers Ivalua’s side as a provider. Your side as a deployer, starting with staff training, stays with you. The AI procurement strategy page explains the duties.
Who can help you prepare Ivalua for IVA?
Ivalua and its partners can switch the features on and explain them. The preparation around them is ordinary platform work: the role matrix, the supplier and contract data, the ERP flows and the upgrade tests. That is the work I do on Ivalua: three full-cycle implementations at BNP Paribas, from functional design to configuration, integrations and custom SQL, certified Ivalua L1 to L3.

Frequently asked questions
Short answers to the questions people ask, each one sourced above.
What is Ivalua IVA?
IVA is the AI built into the Ivalua platform. Launched in November 2023 as the Intelligent Virtual Assistant, with capabilities including supplier research, a legal assistant, an RFP assistant and chat with documents, it is now presented by Ivalua as the Intelligent Virtual Agent, which can carry out tasks across the platform.
Is IVA Studio generally available?
Ivalua released IVA Studio in beta on 11 June 2026 and announced general availability for the summer of 2026. By 29 October 2026, no public press release or release note confirmed general availability. Ask Ivalua for the status on your version, in writing.
Is Ivalua’s AI included in the licence?
Ivalua has not published how IVA is licensed: included in the subscription, as an add-on, or by usage. The cost of the language model may also depend on the model you choose. Ask your account team for the terms in writing before you plan a rollout.
Does Ivalua use our data to train AI models?
Ivalua says it never uses customer data to train language models and never pools it with other customers’ data. It also lets customers choose among models from several providers or bring their own. Check which model runs your instance and that your data processing agreement covers it.
Can IVA act without a user asking?
Yes, according to Ivalua: IVA can run on demand, inside workflows, or automatically when an event occurs, such as a supplier risk alert. Ivalua says every action is logged and that IVA cannot exceed the permissions it runs with. Decide who approves before an automatic action affects a supplier, a contract or a payment.
Which Ivalua version do I need for IVA Studio?
Ivalua’s release does not give a version number. One press report from Ivalua NOW 2026 linked IVA Studio to version 182. Confirm with Ivalua which features need which version before planning an upgrade around them.
